Sea View
About this artwork
Turner is renowned for his unique and inspiring sense of colour. Here the clouds span the spectrum of a rainbow – from orange-red and gold, through apricot and pink tones to intense blue and violet. The sun catches the boats in the foreground, turning their sails gold against the deep green waves. The location of the view is unknown. Turner painted studies such as this for his own reference and enjoyment; they seem to express his sense of wonder at the drama and beauty of nature.
