About this artwork

Eardley usually drew on small sheets of paper. If she needed more surface area, she would add sheets to the sides in a rough, piecemeal fashion, paperclipping or gluing everything together. In her works made in the north-east village of Catterline, it is unusual to find drawings acting as precise studies for paintings. The artist positioned herself on the east side of the Catterline pier to make this drawing, showing the curve of the bay with the rocky mound known as the Kale Tap sketched in on the left.
