About this artwork

Eardley began to paint the boats and the sea at Catterline in earnest in 1960, just after she moved from a cottage at the edge of the village to one in the centre of it. Her new cottage looked down onto the curving bay and the waves as they came crashing in. This offered a quite different view to the one she saw from her previous home. Perhaps it was because she could witness the theatrics of a vast open sea at all times of day from her doorstep that she turned with such vigour to this new subject matter.
