About this artwork
Dame Evelyn Glennie is recognised as the first musician to maintain a full-time career as a solo percussionist. She has won numerous awards for her music and has collaborated with musicians and orchestras around the world. By the age of twelve Glennie was profoundly deaf. She has described how her first percussion teacher helped her to have an awareness of sound to the point where her body is ‘a resonating chamber.’ Chris Close photographed Glennie for his series Between the Lines: Portraits of Authors when she appeared at the Edinburgh International Book Festival in 2017.
