About this artwork

Prior to the introduction of roll-on-roll-off ferries in the 1960s, the ability to have your automobile hoisted onto a ferry was the height of convenience compared with the precarious sea crossings documented in other photographs like Ferry Boat at Kyle of Loch Alsh. Here, a car with London registration is lifted aboard a steamer – possibly the MV Lochmor – a mail, passenger and cargo vessel serving Tarbert, Rodel, Lochmaddy and Lochboisdale three times a week between 1930 and 1964.
