About this artwork

New Bird I is part-man, part-bird. By 1965, the date of New Bird I, many other sculptors of her generation were abandoning bronze for steel and plastics and were even painting their works. Frink remained utterly faithful to representative sculpture. It was cast in bronze in an edition of seven, but this is an additional cast, made for the artist and numbered 0/0. As her fame grew and she had more exhibitions, she had casts made of her earlier works, to allow her to lend them readily to exhibitions.
