About this artwork

In this series of works, made for an exhibition at Glasgow Print Studio titled Show Me Your Glow (2018), Phillips worked in an improvised way over a period of several months, moving back and forth between various printmaking processes with the assistance of Ian McNicol, Master Printer. Underpinning these works are thoughts about absorption, touch and connection which Phillips explores largely through analogue means, but often in reference to the digital. In People to People, three knotted strips of inked and printed newsprint are suspended in a colour field of pink fading to white. Choices about placement and proximity of the knots are brought into focus by the title which brings an anthropomorphic dimension to the artwork. People to People is drawn from a game of the same name developed in the 1970s in United States as part of a cooperative play movement called the New Games Movement. The game encourages physical proximity to others through a playful, not competitive, approach. Phillips makes a connection between this ethos and her own preferred way of working with others.
