In this series of works, made for an exhibition at Glasgow Print Studio titled Show Me Your Glow (2018), Phillips worked in an improvised way over a period of several months, moving back and forth between various printmaking processes with the assistance of Ian McNicol, Master Printer. Underpinning these works are thoughts about absorption, touch and connection which Phillips explores largely through analogue means, but often in reference to the digital. In this work, two loose braids made from strips of paper were printed on a woodblock - simultaneously flattening them and fixing them together in an image. Phillips frequently uses processes of braiding, knotting and folding to manipulate paper that she then subjects to the weight of the press. There is an unpredictable element to the outcome as the three dimensional shapes twist, fold and sometime tear under the pressure. The title, Toucher, speaks to the intimate relationship between the person who makes, the materials they manipulate, and the things that get made.
