Becoming screen

About this artwork

In this series of works, made for an exhibition at Glasgow Print Studio titled Show Me Your Glow (2018), Phillips worked in an improvised way over a period of several months, moving back and forth between various printmaking processes with the assistance of Ian McNicol, Master Printer. Underpinning these works are thoughts about absorption, touch and connection which Phillips explores largely through analogue means, but often in reference to the digital. This series of works, while analogue in the making, often also elicit the digital. Unanchored forms float in simulated space, suspended in frozen gradients as in this work Becoming Screen. The title of this work reflects Phillips’ interest in our increasing absorption into the digital realm and points towards the screen as interface. In this print, solid and recognisable materials - paper and tape - are combined with colour gradients that suggest a state of physical and mental ‘elsewhereness’.
