About this artwork
In this series of works, made for an exhibition at Glasgow Print Studio titled Show Me Your Glow (2018), Phillips worked in an improvised way over a period of several months, moving back and forth between various printmaking processes with the assistance of Ian McNicol, Master Printer. Underpinning these works are thoughts about absorption, touch and connection which Phillips explores largely through analogue means, but often in reference to the digital. In Creative Europe, a photo-polymer test plate (ordinarily used to determine the exposure time for a printed image) takes centre-stage. Rather than use the photo-polymer process to determine the perfect exposure for an image, Phillips gives precedence to the grayscale device itself. Behind that sits an ink transfer from a woodcut used in an earlier piece. Working on multiple projects simultaneously, the artist often uses remnants of one work to create another, weaving a connective thread through her practice.
