In this series of works, made for an exhibition at Glasgow Print Studio titled Show Me Your Glow (2018), Phillips worked in an improvised way over a period of several months, moving back and forth between various printmaking processes with the assistance of Ian McNicol, Master Printer. Underpinning these works are thoughts about absorption, touch and connection which Phillips explores largely through analogue means, but often in reference to the digital. Phillips approach to making prints is both improvised and intuitive and comes from the experience of working with print in its many forms. Imagery is not conceptualised and executed, it is eked out of a process that involves the manipulation of material that is often close at hand. In this work, printing directly from a cotton rag (used for cleaning woodblocks and etching plates) and a crumpled ring of paper Phillips creates a trompe l’oeil effect that feels tangibly material. The cleaning rag is no longer a byproduct of the process, but is seen in its own right.
