Roberts’s collages engage with race and gender politics and the complicated narratives of African American history, as well as art history. She draws from popular culture, combining found and manipulated images with drawn and painted details to create composite figures. Interested in how young bodies convey vulnerability, but also a naïve strength, Roberts typically depicts adolescents.
