About this artwork
This is one of 25 ‘original lithographs in colour by contemporary artists’ commissioned and printed under the Contemporary Lithographs scheme (1937–38). John Piper was a founder of the enterprise and gave hands-on assistance to those contributing artists who had little or no experience of lithography. These were high-quality prints made in large editions and sold at reasonable prices in a drive to bring contemporary art to a wider audience, especially to school children.
