John Bellany
Salomé
About this artwork
The opera Salomé, by Oscar Wilde and with music by Richard Strauss, was staged at the Edinburgh Festival in 1989. Bellany, who had recently overcome serious illness, saw this staging of Salomé, daughter of King Herod. In the Bible story, she demands the severed head of John the Baptist, and in Wilde’s version, she picks up the head and kisses it.
