The Fiery Dragon (for 'XXI Welsh Gypsy Folk-Tales')
About this artwork
A knight rides to the rescue of a girl, who is about to be killed by the ferocious dragon. The dragon breathes fire, but the knight has watered his horse so well that it spits out two jets of water and extinguishes the flames. The monster’s curved neck, coiled tail and the curls of smoke form a dramatic spiral around the girl. Miller Parker has used delicate hatched lines, created by very fine cutting of the wood block, to shape the figures and to capture the fall of light.
