About this artwork
‘Herte and Dogges’ is one of a series of 37 illustrations made by Miller Parker for the fine art book ‘The Fables of Esope’. The book was published in a limited edition of 250 by Gregynog Press in 1931. Previous artistic depictions of Aesop’s ancient, moralistic fables had been conventional and based on the ideas of predecessors, but Parker chose to illustrate her own original and contemporary depictions of the stories, to popular acclaim. Walter Lewis, printer to Cambridge University Press wrote at the time, ‘I do not think that I have ever seen such a beautifully printed book … an example of the finest presswork I have ever seen.’
