About this artwork
Miller Parker produced 37 wood engravings for The Fables of Esope, published in 1932 with initial letters and binding designed by McCance. The text was based upon the first English edition of Aesop’s fables, printed by William Caxton (about 1422–1491) in 1484. Here the chicken tries to fend off the cat, which is determined to eat him. Miller Parker brilliantly captures the texture of fur and feathers with intricate hatched lines. She loved cats and depicted them many times, often as agents of disruption.
