About this artwork

Evans painted Day and Evening during his first term at the Royal College of Art in London. During his studies there, Evans embarked upon an impressive sequence of large, abstract paintings, which owe something to Wyndham Lewis and the Vorticists. Many of his abstract paintings of the early 1930s depict strange machine-like motifs, and are remarkable for their size, confidence, and independence.
