About this artwork

Etching employs a metal plate coated with acid-resistant ground into which the design is drawn using a sharp metal tool. Acid is used to etch the lines of the design into the plate. Taking up the medium in the early 1920s, Knight was strongly influenced by Los Caprichos in her extensive use of aquatint. The method suits her broadly figurative style and this image displays a bold use of tone that takes a direct lesson from Goya’s dramatic series. The image shows two women in a traditional fairground swing ride.
