Leah's Bedroom

About this artwork

This interior is the bedroom of the photographer’s great niece, Leah. It provides a portrait of the child in absence, through the careful arrangement of her toys and games. The photograph comes from Mitchell’s series In This Place, part of a longer-term project which she began during the 1990s and returned to in 2016. This focused on family members living on the Raploch Estate in Stirling, an estate that ranked highly in the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD). The closed translucent curtains create a sense of luminosity. In blocking the outside, Mitchell perhaps indicates a place of safety, where Leah’s childhood world is not impacted by adult concerns.
