About this artwork
Here, the extremely high relief of the main engraved lines is set against an elaborate, textured background of soft-ground etching. Hayter has experimented by pressing various textiles, crumpled paper, leaves and even palm prints onto a soft ground laid on an etching plate. When these items were removed, the impressions were etched onto the metal surface, providing a backdrop for his signature whiplash lines.
