Mary at the Dalmally Tup Sales, Dalmally, Argyll & Bute, October 2013

About this artwork

Mary McCall Smith is the third generation of her family to run Connachan Farm in Perthshire. She is a prominent figure in the blackfaced-sheep breeding community in Scotland and is known for the quality of her tups (male breeding sheep). Sophie Gerrard made a portrait of Mary consisting of a sequence of photographs, two of which are shown here. Mary’s portrait forms part of the series Drawn To The Land, an ongoing project exploring the Scottish landscape through the eyes of the women farming it. Working in a male-dominated world, the women all have their own story to tell and their own emotional connection to the landscape.
