About this artwork

Ian Fleming is pictured here at the age of 31, at which time he was Senior Lecturer at Glasgow School of Art. Fleming taught at the School from 1931 until 1947 and was Principal of Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen, from 1954 until 1971. Here, Fleming has depicted himself at work in his studio. According to a note by Fleming, the pictures in the background are: in the top right Sutherland, drawn by his great friend Willie Wilson, and top left a drawing by his friend Edgar Hollway, whom he met through Wilson. The drawing in the top centre is by Fleming himself and below that, seen behind his shoulder is a Degas reproduction. On the table to his right is a selection of tools and equipment for etching.
