treasure hidden in a field
About this artwork
This print dates from the year that the artist first learnt to silkscreen print. Before its use by Andy Warhol and many other artists in the 1960s, it was mainly viewed as a technique for commercial printers, not artists. Sister Corita believed in the democratic principle of producing relatively large numbers of her prints and selling them at a low cost. She wished to opt out of what she felt was an elitist system of fine art.
The title, treasure hidden in a field, comes from the Bible, New Testament (Matthew 13:44) and the parable of the hidden treasure: ‘Now Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found, and hid. In his joy, he goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field.’
