About this artwork
This view has been sketched on the spot from Edinburgh’s Calton Hill. The panoramic skyline from Calton Hill has for centuries been one of the city’s most famous viewpoints. Here, Edinburgh Castle is visible back left and in the centre the Balmoral hotel, with what appears to be the smoke and steam of Waverley train station to its rear. This is one of a number drawings of Edinburgh from Calton Hill in this sketchbook, which was used by James Paterson between March and July 1921 in Edinburgh and on the continent.
