This view has been sketched from the top of Calton Hill in Edinburgh looking west towards Princes Street with Edinburgh Castle background left. In the right foreground is the monument to Dugald Stewart (1753-1828, writer and philosopher), built in 1831 and designed by William Henry Playfair. In the centre middle-ground is the Balmoral hotel, with its distinctive clock tower which was finished in 1902.
