Larry Herman
Red Road Flats; Glasgow
About this artwork
When Herman photographed the Red Road Flats in the mid-1970s, the towering structures were only six years old. The buildings offered contemporary high-rise living that was intended to be an improvement on the previous overcrowded housing conditions of tenements. Here Herman juxtaposes the monolithic structures with the playground below, where children are playing on a roundabout. In 2008 the Red Road Flats were in turn condemned and subsequently demolished between 2010-15.
