About this artwork

This print was made by the firm MacMahon of Aberdeen at Albert Quay on the premises of A&M Smith Limited, a fish processing plant in Aberdeen. The fish were destined for Porto, Portugal and the photograph was likely intended for display at the Portuguese importer. The average weight of the giant cod was 77lbs or 35 kilos. The three young boys seem diminutive in size next to these giant specimens. Inscriptions on the print reveal that ‘J’ was seven years old; ‘W’ four and a half years old and ‘H’ almost ten years old.
