About this artwork

This is one of Mielich’s earliest drawings, made when he was just nineteen. It reveals the influence of the Austrian painter Wolf Huber, particularly in the treatment of smoke and the hatchings, but also in the face of the woman on the extreme right of the sheet. The subject of witches would have been familiar to Mielich from his time working with Albrecht Altdorfer, who made a number of paintings of witches. This sheet is dated 1535, and signed in Hans Mielich’s monogram "HM".
