Although this drawing is now rather faded, it still displays Veronese’s characteristic free touch and delicate application of dabs of wash. Using both sides of the sheet, Veronese sketched a succession of ideas for compositions showing the Baptism of Christ. He mainly focused on the relationship between the two central characters in the story, Christ and the Baptist. Veronese and his studio produced over twelve paintings of the Baptism, making it one of his most popular subjects. This sheet does not correspond exactly to any known work, but is usually associated with his altarpiece in the Church of the Redentore, Venice, a work left incomplete at his death and finished by his assistants.
