About this artwork
This is one of about thirty papiers collés (pasted papers) which Pablo Picasso made at the end of 1912. They were his first collages and marked a new development in his work. Combining line drawing with collage, a stylised glass and bottle are arranged on a tabletop. The bottle’s lower half is formed by newspaper cut from Le Journal of 3 December 1912. In the centre, stencilled letters spell out ‘OLD / JA / R’ – shorthand for Old Jamaica Rum. In places the paper is discoloured and distorted – a result of its age, and the artist’s liberal use of glue to apply the collaged elements. This only reveals more of the life and technique of this experimental drawing using line and paper.
