About this artwork

In 1910 Cadell went on an extended trip to Venice. During this visit he began to use a freer technique and brighter palette. He captures the strong contrasts of light and shade for which Venice is renowned in this view of the Giudecca canal, as seen from a room in the Calcina Hotel. Cadell returned to Edinburgh in late autumn and an exhibition of his new work was held at the gallery of local art dealer Aitken Dott.
