About this artwork

In the 1940s, Redpath was greatly influenced by the French painter Henri Matisse (1869-1954). She took inspiration from his heightened colours including pinks, greens and yellows, which can be seen in this work. She was also influenced by his window view compositions, in which landscapes are seen from an interior setting. Redpath travelled to the Isle of Skye with family for a month in 1946 and made numerous paintings on location. It was a fruitful period for the artist, during which time she created enough work for a solo exhibition at the Gordon Small Gallery on Princes Street in Edinburgh in March 1947.
