About this artwork
This dramatic image shows the main event of the Carnival, the race of riderless horses from the Piazza del Popolo to Piazza Venezia. Allan wrote in 1780 that ‘I did at Rome a set of Drawings … representing the Amusements of the Carnival at Rome in 8 drawings which Sandby bought from me for London, and he executed them charmingly in aquatinta prints’. Four prints by Sandby after Allan’s drawings were published as a series in 1780–1.
