About this artwork
The title of this work not only refers to the cry of the baby depicted, but also makes a tongue-in-cheek reference to Edvard Munch’s iconic painting ‘The Scream’ (1895). Lichtenstein’s image is far removed from the psychological anguish associated with Munch’s famous work. The source Lichtenstein used was a cartoon in a comic book, ‘BLONDIE at Home Sweet Home’. This was one of many cuttings from comics, newspapers and other printed material collected by Lichtenstein over his career and returned to these sources in the 1990s. For this print, he made changes to the original composition; he removed a hand that appeared in the comic, and replaced the original printed Benday dots in the background with diagonal stripes.
