About this artwork
David Shrigley works in drawing, sculpture, animation and photography, as well as printmaking. His decision to use woodcut is a knowing nod to a tradition that embraces artistic predecessors such as Dürer and Schmidt-Rottluff. Master of dead-pan humour and of stating the obvious, Shrigley’s woodcut tells it like it is. What is different about this print is that it doesn’t hide its mistakes, it makes an ex(h)ibition of them. The splintering of the letter forms and the rough edge of the block add to a feeling that skill is secondary to intent.
