About this artwork

The painted versions of this wave motif sold out so quickly that Barns-Graham decided to make it into an etching to enable her to make several copies at once. This is an edition of 70. Peculiarly, this work was made at a time in Barns-Graham’s career when she was making her most colourful, expressive and vibrant prints. Although Barns-Graham revealed in interviews that this work was inspired by her observations while walking along St Andrews’ East Sands, by giving no clues in the title, the viewer is left to decide what sort of waves they are; whether seismograph, musical octave, hillside or sea.
