Figure and Red Chequered Screen (Morges)
About this artwork
Born near London, Yarrow left England for Paris in 1924, becoming part of the Surrealist group. She was particularly close to the poet Pierre Reverdy, and to Alberto Giacometti, Max Ernst and Leonora Carrington. This work was made in 1935 in Morges, Switzerland, where, following a nervous breakdown, Yarrow spent time in a clinic. She fled Paris in 1940 with Carrington, then in 1948 returned to live in London, where she concentrated on ceramics. A fascinating figure in British art, Yarrow’s work remains little known.
