Louise Bourgeois

10 am is When You Come to Me

About this artwork

Hands feature in many works by Bourgeois, often as a symbol of dependence. Here, Bourgeois traced her own and those of her assistant and confidant, Jerry Gorovoy, to create a portrait of their friendship. Gorovoy worked with Bourgeois for thirty years; their day together would begin at 10 am. Bourgeois once commented: "When you are at the bottom of a well you look around and you say, who is going to get me out? In this case, Jerry comes and presents a rope." This is one of 10 unique versions Bourgeois made; a larger version with forty sheets also exists.
