About this artwork

The artist made this sculpture by casting the hands and arms of Jerry Gorovoy, the artist’s assistant and closest friend. The open hand and closed fist offer a visual representation of the respective acts of giving and taking. The idea of opposing positions was a significant aspect of Bourgeois’s outlook. Here, the two arms are fused together, producing a single sculpture in which these oppositional ways of being coexist. For Bourgeois, human nature was complex and often combined contradictory forces.
