About this artwork

This charming portrait was painted in London, a year after Laura Hobson’s marriage to Robert Moubray of Cockairny House in Fife. Laura was the fourth daughter of a prosperous building contractor in Tottenham, several of whose other daughters also sat to the artist. Although world-renowned as a landscapist, Constable was particularly appreciated by Lucian Freud – himself an outstanding figure and portrait painter – for his rare and refined portraits.
