This work is a set of five 'T' shapes made from fluorescent tube lights. Although originally a group of ten, these five were grouped together by Flavin on numerous occasions. After 1963, Flavin dedicated all his sculptures to artists, philosophers, collectors and dealers. This work is dedicated to his friend, the artist Donald Judd. The two met in 1962 and remained close throughout their lives (Judd even named his son Flavin in 1968). Judd had only recently introduced colour to his work in the 1980s, which he used in distinct blocks. Flavin admired this minimalist approach and Judd's influence can be felt in this series. However the fluorescent lighting in Flavin's sculptures often allows adjacent colours to mix, something Judd would never have explored.
