About this artwork

Best known for her work as an architect and furniture designer, Enniscorthy, Ireland-born Eileen Gray also made drawings, paintings and collages throughout her long career. This inventive collage dates from the Second World War. As a foreign resident in occupied France, she was forced to leave her coastal home in Saint Tropez, to live temporarily in a small house in the inland Vaucluse region. This upheaval disrupted many of Gray’s in-progress design projects and left her with few options for a creative outlet. Making a virtue out of necessity, she started to work with paper; drawing, painting and printing on it before cutting the sheets into new shapes, figures and landscapes.
