This full-length portrait from Raeburn’s late career shows the newly married Helen Montgomery (née Graham). She is dressed in a simple, high-waisted dress typical of the elegant fashions of the Regency period. Drawing on the traditions of ‘Grand Manner’ portraiture of the eighteenth century, Raeburn’s painting is both an evocative portrayal of a young woman beginning a new phase in her life and an impressively assured celebration of her marriage. The couple went on to have five children; however tragedy struck the family in 1828 when Lady Montgomery died after giving birth to her youngest son.
