Measuring almost five metres across, this painting depicts moonlight reflected through trees and onto water. The field of black paint is broken by areas of blue representing light: three crescent shapes in the upper half of the canvas contain patterns that suggest the silhouettes of leaves and branches reflected in the water. In the smallest central pool of light we see the reflection of the moon itself from which all the light in the painting appears to emanate. Katz characteristically reduces his image to its essential forms and atmosphere, here reflecting the dazzling temporal quality of the appearance of the full moon.
