Saint Ignatius Pleading Before Pope Julius III for the Establishment of a German Jesuit College in Rome
About this artwork
The Spaniard Ignatius of Loyola was the founder of the Jesuit Order (Society of Jesus). This drawing illustrates Ignatius’s plea to Pope Julius III to establish a Jesuit College for Germans in Rome, in 1552. Ignatius was beatified in 1609 and on this occasion, a book on his life (displayed nearby) was published. The book does not contain any reference to the designer of the prints. This is a preparatory drawing for plate 64. It was in the collection of the famous French collector and connoisseur Pierre-Jean Mariette who attributed it to Rubens. Only one other drawing for this project survives.
