About this artwork
This is a copy or imitation after a work by Isaac van Ostade. In style and composition it resembles two other drawings by him (Leiden University and Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin). It shows a violent and furious fight between a group of peasants outside an inn. The men attack each other with knives and furniture, while the children and adults in the background seem to remain unaffected. This scene does not so much represent everyday life, but specifically illustrates the vices of drunkenness and foolishness.
