Donor Window Representing the Major Donors to the Portrait of the Nation project, Headed by a Roundel Depicting HM Queen Elizabeth II, 1926 - 2022
About this artwork
This window was commissioned to record the generosity of the major donors who made possible the major refurbishment of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery which took place between 2009 and 2011. The window includes twelve portraits of individual benefactors and fourteen further roundels representing various trusts and foundations. The flowers in each section all have a particular significance for the donors. A portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II sits at the top of the design, below which are two heraldic shields representing the Scottish Government and the Heritage Lottery Fund. The small figures which drift down and across the window symbolise the people of Scotland. Kinnaird drew and engraved the images on both sides of flashed glass (where a thin layer of colour is applied onto clear glass), using the traditional copper-wheel engraving technique in new and innovative ways. The window was assembled and installed in June 2012 by the stained-glass artist, Patrick Ross-Smith.
