Yarrow was part of the Surrealist group in Paris in the 1920s and 1930s, having left England in 1924. She also spent time in the South of France, where she became close friends with the poet Pierre Reverdy, who later introduced her to members of the Surrealist group. Amongst those she met were Max Ernst and Leonora Carrington (with whom she fled Paris in 1940). During the period when this etching was made, Yarrow was studying at ‘Atelier 17’, the printmaking workshop established in Paris by Stanley Hayter in the late 1920s. This etching, which shows the influence of Joan Miró, is an exciting recent discovery.
