Bourgeois made many Cells, contained structures made from salvaged materials in which found and fabricated sculptures are placed. She described the Cells as being about different forms of pain: emotional, psychological and physical. The central, three-headed fabric sculpture in this work represents different aspects of a single individual, reflecting the multiplicity of human nature. The architectural form around it could be both a haven and a prison. Bourgeois was also interested in biological forms and the Cells also reflect the connecting elements that make up all living beings.
